Crash diets cause you to cut food intake dramatically and cause the body to:
  • Store fat as it thinks there is a famine
  • Burn muscle for fuel
  • Lose water + glycogen

UNHEALTHY WEIGHTLOSS!

Avoid Muscle Loss
During weight loss you only want to be losing fat. Muscle is the most efficient fat burning machine in the body! By shrinking them you are significantly reducing the body’s ability to burn fat. On a crash diet, for every pound you lose of fat, you will also lose 1lb of muscle. Therefore fat % compared to muscle % in the body will remain the same!

When You Return to Normal Eating
The body is smarter than you think, and after weeks of following a crash diet it will adapt to the new low calorie intake by reducing its basal metabolic rate. BMR is the energy needed by the body just to survive and keep ticking over. You can now survive on less food than before, but when your eating returns to normal an even larger energy surplus is created and you will put all the weight you have lost back on + more! Thus making it harder next time you plan to lose weight.

Low Carb - High Protein Diets
The problem with these diets is that the body is depleted of glycogen (carbohydrate storage), which also holds water. For every 1lb of glycogen lost, you will lose 1.5lbs of water. Therefore rapid weight loss is down to water and not fat. These diets also involve calorie reduction so the above principles also apply. High levels of protein are also not good for the body as the kidneys are overloaded in order to process the increased protein. Protein has a limited storage in the body so excess amounts will be excreted.
